Houston mayor lobbies to keep Deshaun Watson in a Texans uniform: ‘I know he loves this City’

Finally, a bipartisan issue that Houstonians can agree on.

The Texans and star quarterback Deshaun Watson are heading for a messy divorce, if recent rumors and speculation come to pass. While a trade won’t be able to be completed until the new league year in March, plenty believe a separation is more likely than not.

Count Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner as one of the many trying their hardest to keep Watson in a Texans uniform. Turner voiced his support for Watson and the “love” he has for Houston over the weekend.

“I value @deshaunwatson as a player but I respect him even more as a person. I know he loves this City because I have seen how much he has given of himself and his treasure to peiple in this City. I am humbled to be his Mayor. I hope that won’t change anytime soon. st”

MORE: Dysfunction, turmoil in Houston lead to rampant Watson rumors

Watson has not yet requested a trade from the Texans, but is expected to do so in the coming months, even as Houston continues the process of finding a head coach. The team has reportedly zeroed in on Eric Bieniemy or Leslie Frazier as the next HC, and per ESPN’s Adam Schefter and Chris Mortensen, whoever they hire won’t make a difference, as Watson will want out.

Recently retired quarterback Josh McCown also has been interviewed for the role.

Houston’s dysfunction has been at the forefront of Watson’s desire to get out, with turmoil among he, owner Cal McNair and front office executive Jack Easterby, and Houston rejecting Watson’s suggestions for head coaching interviews all playing into the drama.

It’s impressive that Watson has this much love in H-Town, but it certainly says something that it appears that a mayor of a city is doing more to keep the quarterback around than the owners of the team.
